Monsoon Gallery Articles and Editorials 2005
The Monsoon Gallery Archives for 2005
We've gone through all the media surrounding the gallery and
created an archival collection of articles and editorials about the gallery,
its artists, and its employees.
If there's something in particular that you were looking for
and you don't see it here, then please don't hesitate to give
us a call or send us an email and let us know.
Art is everywhere in South Bethlehem these days. There are studios at the
Banana Factory of course, as well as a bevy of quirky home craft stores
selling colorful wares. There’s art in unexpected places too –
a slew paintings leans in the storefront of a boarded up five-and-dime;
there’s exhibit space in optometrist’s office. But until May
of 2003, there was no fine art gallery. There was no place where local art
connoisseurs could see, and buy, the work of regional, national and international
fine artists.
Looking back on it now, it seems a perfect opportunity, a fail-safe investment.
However, when local art lover and entrepreneur Ranjeet Pawar first endeavored
to make Monsoon Gallery a reality, success was far from guaranteed. “Too
often people have become accustomed to thinking that just because something’s
in Southside Bethlehem, or even just the Lehigh Valley it can’t be
good,” Pawar says, explaining the public perception that has been
one of his early challenges. He pauses and then adds, “That might
have been true at one point, but now it’s just a fallacy.”
Spending time in Monsoon will quickly cure anyone of the notion that there
is no top-notch art to be found in our local area. Monsoon’s gallery
floor holds breathtaking paintings, sculptures, pottery pieces, as well
as some truly wonderful art in that category called “other.”
Up to thirty artists have work on display at any given time, both those
with ties to the area like Rigo Peralta, Eric Armusik, and Salma Arastu,
as well as artists from all over the globe. When naming the home countries
of artists whose work has been represented at Monsoon, it sounds like Pawar
is reading an atlas.”
“India, Lebanon, England, Israel, Romania, France, Mexico, Germany,
the Dominican Republic…everywhere in the world,” he says. “And
a lot of American artists who are very well known in other parts of the
country that people in the Lehigh Valley may not be familiar with.”
Valley residents may become very familiar with these artists soon, as Monsoon
expands its visibility and scope (a “spinoff” gallery, Rain,
opened in November) and Southside Bethlehem continues to flourish. “You
can’t avoid the Southside anymore,” Pawar says with a laugh.
“And you can’t avoid Monsoon.”
