Ann Schlegel, Nava Mentkow & Kate Birch
"In Bloom"
Exhibition
Dates
May 2nd - through July 9th First Friday Receptions
May 2nd- 7:00 - 10:00pm
June 6th- 7:00 - 10:00pm
Just as spring rumbles to life and our parks and gardens burst with blooms, the walls at Monsoon Gallery (11 E 3rd St. Bethlehem) are filling with flowers as well. "In Bloom" is the theme for the gallery's May and June exhibit featuring three powerful female artists each with their own take on the business of blossoms.
Allentown painter Ann Schlegel is a well-known Lehigh Valley artist. She was the Official Artist of Musikfest in 2003 and her studio at the Banana Factory has long been a popular destination. Inspired by both the great Romantic artists of Europe and her own garden, Schlegel is passionate about painting flowers. The Monsoon show will feature bright oil paintings of daffodils, daises, sunflowers, roses, and forsythia. Schlegel's recognizable painterly style is enhanced by the beautiful frames in which the works are hung.
Kate Birch is a rising young painter from the West. She is a recent graduate from the University of Utah, but just because her formal education is completed does not mean that Birch has stopped studying. She is "constantly analyzing patterns and designs," drawing inspiration from patterns from the Orient, Morocco, and Mexico for her paintings. Her mixed media floral creations demonstrate influences as diverse as Indonesian batik fabrics and designs from the Arts and Crafts Movement. With titles such as "Metaphor #2," "Resting Lightly," and "The Air Around us," Birch's paintings are whimsical and beautiful.
The third painter in this spring show is Nava Mentkow -- a graduate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts whose work screams spring. Mentkow, who recently moved to South Florida, paints oversized roses which almost burst off the canvas. She works with palette knives rather than brushes to create a texture so rich that she reports that viewers are often overcome with a desire "to reach out and touch the surface of the paintings." Monsoon Gallery asks that visitors resist the urge to fondle the paintings, at least until you take one home with you…
All paintings from each of the three artists are for sale and ready to be hung, just in time for spring.
