Stephen Estelle started working in jewelry design in 1996 while living in a Tibetan settlement in
Nepal. Raised on a ranch in southern Montana near Yellowstone Park, his university studies carried him first to Paris and
then to Kathmandu. He received a bachelor’s degree in French Literature from Swarthmore College and spent several years
studying art and literature at the Sorbonne and the Universite Stendhal in France.

During his time in Europe he took a
keen interest in Buddhism and Tibetan language. This inspired him to move to Nepal where he spent five years studying
Buddhist philosophy at a local monastery. His knowledge of Tibetan language combined with the horsemanship skills of his
youth landed him a job leading adventure treks in remote areas of the Tibetan Plateau.
During his years in Asia, Stephen developed a close friendship with a family of jewelers whose lineage has been making jewelry for the maharajas of Nepal for more than four centuries. It is through them that he learned his design techniques as well as a deep and abiding respect for the jeweler’s craft.
Stephen’s rich and varied background inspires his uniquely calm voice in the world of fine jewelry. The driving force behind his work is his philosophy that elegance necessitates simplicity, and the simpler something is, the longer it will be appreciated. Stephen starts by creating complex designs and then refines them by removing unnecessary elements. The resulting interplay of shape, texture and proportion produces truly exquisite and timeless jewelry.
Crafting the finest jewelry requires an understanding that each piece is the sum of its parts, and therefore even smallest detail must be of the highest quality. Stephen’s designs are hand-crafted from start to finish with this level of integrity. He uses only the finest precious metals and hand-cut stones.
Stephen divides his time between his studios in Red Lodge, Montana and Kathmandu, Nepal. When not pursuing artistic endeavors, you’re likely to find him astride a horse, leading expeditions on the Tibetan Plateau or moving cattle on the family ranch in the Rocky Mountains.
