Salma does not merely “paint”,
she exudes emotion. Her mixed media artwork is impossible to
define with words. As a result, the only way to experience Salma's
art is to succumb to its magic. The passion of love and inner
peace is what inspires her to create exceptional works that
speak to the spirit of humanity in all of us. Salma’s
purpose in creating her art is to illustrate the inherent qualities
that

unite people of all races, genders, and faiths. Her work is also “a reflection of the spirit”, Arastu
says, “the one within her and the one she wants people to feel
when they see her paintings”. The people she depicts are always
faceless, interchangeable figures unified by action and movement.
They pray, dance, grieve and sing, but are always together and connected
by the rolling line of Salma’s brush. They are a testimony to
the emotions we all experience when we are engaged in celebration
or loneliness, laughter or sorrow.
In her work, Salma paints people of all lands with their colorful, native fabrics and
intimate gestures and her paintings reflect the lyrical movements
and intricate patterns of these peoples. She uses a vivid palette
that reminds her of India and a continuous line that connects
one figure to another. Some of her works are direct influences of Indian folk art, while others
are total abstracts. In her efforts, she has tried to combine
Eastern spirituality and western techniques of painting she
has learned over the years. She has been described as “the
primitive meeting the ultra-modern,” and through these
contrasting elements in her work, she searches for unity. When
that unity or balance is achieved, it brings about a tranquility
and joy for the artist that is also palpable to the viewer.
If you open your heart to it, it will bare the soul of the artist,
as well as your own.
Ms. Arastu has been painting for twenty-seven years, since graduating
with a Masters degree in Fine Arts from Maharaja Sayajirao University,
Baroda, India in 1975. She has since won many awards for her art.Her
work is also included in more than a hundred private collections in
the United States, Germany, India and the Middle East. She has held
twenty-five solo shows throughout the world, along with her participation
in various group shows. In addition to her prolific painting, Ms.
Arastu has also written several published works of free-verse poetry
and short stories in her native Hindi. She continues to write and
provides eloquent prose to accompany her paintings for gallery showings.
